John A. Mason


John Mason received his Bachelor of Science Degree with high honors from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988, and his Juris Doctor from University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1993. Since that time he has maintained a broad-based civil litigation, trial and appellate practice which focuses primarily on defending complex matters including commercial disputes as well as personal injury, product liability, professional negligence (including medical and legal malpractice), wage and hour, class action and unfair business practice claims. Mr. Mason also has extensive experience defending clients in litigation pertaining to the cemetery and funeral industry and has frequently served as a guest speaker and author for deathcare industry trade organizations including the California Funeral Directors Association, the Cemetery and Mortuary Association of California and the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association.

Mr. Mason is rated “AV Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest possible ranking with respect to legal ability and ethics. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Sacramento, Placer and Los Angeles County Bar Associations, the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada, and the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. Mr. Mason has a statewide practice and is admitted in all California state courts, as well as the Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern Districts of the United States District Court in California and the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.

Prior to entering the practice of law, Mr. Mason served as a Consultant to the California State Assembly, Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee. During law school, he was a member of the Moot Court honors Board. Since 1993, he has had the privilege of representing numerous insurance carriers, self-insured organizations, public entities, corporate clients, non-profits and individuals in matters throughout California. In 2003, Mr. Mason joined the law firm of Gurnee Mason Rushford Bonotto & Forestiere LLP and, in 2007, became a partner in the firm.

Throughout his career, Mr. Mason has been actively involved in a number of civic and non-profit organizations in the greater Sacramento region. He is a graduate of the Leadership Roseville program, has served on the City of Roseville’s Growth Management Visioning Committee and Community Priorities Advisory Committee, and presently sits on its Economic Development Advisory Committee.  A member of the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors since 2014, Mr. Mason is currently the Vice President of Economic Development and Government Affairs and also serves on the Chamber’s Political Action Committee.  An avid animal lover, Mr. Mason is a former President of both the Sacramento SPCA and Placer County SPCA boards of directors. He has also served on the Board of Directors of KidsFirst (formerly known as the Placer County Child Abuse Prevention Council) and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Roseville.
